Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 10 Review: The Girl Who Waited

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

We are off to the plague-ridden Apalapucia, with a story that delves into love, loss, and the consequences of time travel. While it’s often praised as one of the standout episodes of Series 6, I find it slightly overrated. Don't get me wrong, The Girl Who Waited is a good episode, but I'll try and tell you why I don't give it peak status in this review.

"Your mobile telephone. I bring you to a paradise planet two billion light years from Earth and you want to update Twitter."

First off, Karen Gillan gets a lot of praise for this episode, but I'd like to give a hand to Arthur Darvill who puts in his best performance in the show so far. His heartfelt performance elevates the episode, particularly in his interactions with the older Amy. I still don't quite buy Amy and Rory though, not down to the acting, just the way the two characters are.

This is probably my main problem with the episode I guess, I've never fully been invested in the Pond's relationship. Just because someone waits for someone it doesn't automatically make it a match made in heaven.

Amy Pond looking hot with trees behind her

Something like this reminds me of the time my wife said let's watch The Notebook. After all the rapey, stalker beginnings this bloke just builds a house and mopes about until she's about to get married to the only decent bloke in the film. Apparently it's really romantic, but if that's romantic we are all fucked.

Anyway, back to Amy and Rory. Rory waited, Amy waited, Amy tried to shag the Doctor the night before her wedding, Amy tried to snog the Doctor at their wedding, Amy calls Rory a moron, stupid and tells him to shut up a lot. Rory just takes it all like a wet bloody blanket as well. Usually anyway!

It shows up more in this series as well. They've lost their daughter and the whole lead up to having a daughter, and they don't seem troubled by it in the slightest. I know we are here for the Doctor and all of time and space, but come on!!

"Glasses are cool, see? Oh yes. Hello handsome man."

Matt Smith wasn't in this much, but he does play being a cunt well. I'm not saying Matt is a cunt by the way, he's just a bloody good actor! I think we all knew old Amy wasn't coming along for the ride though didn't we?

Sorry, I feel like I've grumbled a lot the past couple of weeks. Maybe it is those January blues!!

My main point was this is a good episode, just maybe not quite top for me though.

What did you think of this episode? I often feel like I am in the minority for not loving it, is this the case? Let me know in the comments below. Come along Pond!

RATING: Good!

BEST LINE: "I promised you I would save her and there she is. Safe."
